When should I replace my old boiler?

Most domestic boilers in Scotland last 10-15 years with regular servicing. Past that, reliability drops, parts get harder to source, and efficiency starts falling off — especially on older G-rated units.

Signs your boiler is on the way out:

  • Over 10 years old and needing more frequent repairs
  • Struggling to hold system pressure
  • Making banging, kettling, or whistling noises
  • Taking longer to heat up the house or the hot water
  • Your gas bills keep climbing without your usage changing
  • The engineer has told you parts are getting scarce

A modern A-rated condensing boiler is roughly 90%+ efficient compared with around 60-70% for older units. On an average Edinburgh gas bill, that's a saving of £200-£400 a year — often enough to pay back the new boiler within 6-8 years just on running costs.

We'll always give you an honest call. If your boiler is repairable and worth keeping, we'll say so. If it's past the point where repairs make financial sense, we'll show you the numbers and let you decide.
