LPG Services We Offer

LPG heating, end to end.

We cover everything an LPG household needs — installs, upgrades, servicing, repairs, and full oil-to-LPG conversions — all from the same LPG-certified team.

New LPG boiler installation

Full fixed-price LPG boiler installs for homes off the mains gas grid. We handle the survey, specification, fitting, commissioning, and certification — including conversions from oil and older LPG systems.

Annual LPG boiler servicing

Warranty-compliant annual servicing for LPG boilers, including combustion analysis, flue checks, safety device verification, and a written service report. Reminders sent yearly so you never miss a renewal.

LPG boiler repairs and fault finding

Diagnosis and repair of LPG-specific faults including ignition issues, regulator problems, and combustion faults. We know the differences between mains gas and LPG systems and we carry the right parts for common makes.

Oil-to-LPG and system upgrades

Moving from an old oil boiler to a modern high-efficiency LPG system is one of the biggest running-cost upgrades you can make in a rural property. We plan and install the full changeover.

Why LPG Makes Sense

The practical case for LPG heating.

If you're rural, off-grid, or sitting on an old oil system, LPG is usually the most sensible modern upgrade — cleaner, more efficient, and better supported than the alternatives.

For properties off the mains gas grid

Large parts of rural Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, and the Pentlands aren't on the mains gas network. LPG is the most practical modern heating fuel for these properties — cleaner than oil, responsive like mains gas, and widely supported by boiler manufacturers.

Modern LPG boilers are efficient

Today's LPG-compatible condensing boilers run at 90%+ efficiency, comparable to the best natural gas units. Compared with an old oil boiler running at 70-75%, the fuel savings can be significant over a year.

Instant hot water, full central heating

A modern LPG combi or system boiler gives you the same hot water responsiveness and central heating performance as a mains gas setup. No waiting on oil orders, no dirty tanks, no fumes.

Local, not specialist and distant

LPG work requires extra qualifications beyond standard Gas Safe — so most local plumbers can't legally touch it, and a lot of rural households end up relying on distant specialists. We live and work here, so we're closer and quicker.

Thinking Of Moving Off Oil?

Oil-to-LPG conversions, planned properly.

A lot of rural households are stuck with old oil boilers that are expensive to run, noisy, and getting harder to maintain. Moving to a modern LPG system is usually cheaper on fuel, cleaner in the house, and simpler on annual servicing.

A typical oil-to-LPG changeover

  • Day 1 — Prep: Drain the existing oil system, disconnect and remove the old boiler, prepare the new location and flue route.
  • Day 2 — Install: Fit the new LPG boiler, run the supply pipework, fit the regulator, connect to the tank, and pressure-test the system.
  • Commission: Full combustion analysis, system flush, controls setup, warranty registration, and a proper walk-through before we leave.
  • Aftercare: Annual service reminders so the warranty stays valid, and a local engineer on the end of the phone when you need one.

LPG Boiler FAQs

Common LPG questions, answered.

What is an LPG boiler and how does it differ from a gas boiler?

An LPG boiler runs on liquefied petroleum gas stored in a tank on the property, rather than mains natural gas piped in from the street. Functionally they look and work almost identically — same efficiency, same control, same central heating performance — but the fuel, regulator, burner setup, and engineer qualifications are different. LPG work legally requires extra certification on top of standard Gas Safe.

Is LPG cheaper to run than oil?

It depends on current fuel prices, which move around, but modern high-efficiency LPG boilers generally compete well with oil once you factor in efficiency. Many rural homeowners switch from old oil systems to LPG because the boiler is cheaper, servicing is simpler, and efficiency gains offset the higher per-unit fuel cost. We can run the numbers at your survey.

Do engineers need special qualifications to work on LPG?

Yes. A standard Gas Safe card isn't enough to work on LPG — engineers need additional LPG-specific qualifications on top. Macara Heating is LPG certified and we've been installing, servicing, and repairing LPG systems across rural parts of the Lothians and central Scotland for years. Always ask for the LPG-endorsed Gas Safe card before letting anyone touch an LPG boiler.

Can I convert my old oil boiler to LPG?

In most cases yes — we can replace an oil boiler with a modern LPG-compatible unit, fit the correct LPG regulator and supply pipework, install an LPG tank, and commission the new system. It usually means a tidier setup, lower emissions, and simpler servicing than keeping the old oil system running.

Do you travel to rural areas for LPG work?

Yes. We cover Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, and the Pentlands routinely for LPG work, and we'll travel further across Scotland's central belt — Fife, Falkirk, Stirling — for larger installations and system upgrades. Call us with your postcode and we'll tell you straight away whether it makes sense.
