What A Proper Service Covers

A real service, not a quick sticker and a wave.

A proper boiler service takes around an hour and follows the manufacturer's checklist plus our own extra steps. Here's what's actually happening while the engineer is at your boiler.

Combustion and gas rate

We check combustion performance using a calibrated flue gas analyser and confirm the gas rate is within the manufacturer's spec. This is the single most important check for safety and efficiency.

Pressure, flow, and expansion vessel

System pressure, water flow, and the expansion vessel are all tested. A poorly charged vessel is one of the most common causes of repeated pressure loss calls.

Heat exchanger and burner

We inspect the heat exchanger and burner for sludge build-up, limescale, and signs of wear. Catching corrosion early is a lot cheaper than replacing a failed part.

Flue integrity and seals

The flue route is checked for correct install, integrity, and any signs of leakage. A damaged flue is a safety risk and one of the top items on any proper service.

Safety devices and controls

Pressure relief valves, overheat thermostats, and flame supervision devices are all verified. Controls and thermostat programming are checked at the same time.

Visual inspection and clean

We clean down the boiler casing, check electrical connections, look for corrosion, and leave the unit tidy. You get a written report of everything checked before we leave.

How often should I have my boiler serviced?

Once a year, every year. It's a manufacturer warranty requirement on almost all modern boilers and the single most effective way to prevent breakdowns. We send our customers reminders when theirs is coming up, so it's one less thing to remember.

How much does a boiler service cost?

What happens if I skip a boiler service?

Two things, both bad. First, you'll almost certainly invalidate any remaining manufacturer warranty — which could cost you thousands if a major part fails later. Second, small issues go uncaught and often turn into full breakdowns, usually at the worst possible time.

How long does a boiler service take?

A standard domestic boiler service typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour. If we're also cleaning components, inspecting the flue, or doing additional checks on an older boiler, it can take a bit longer. We don't rush it.

Do you service all boiler makes?

Yes — Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Viessmann, Glow-worm, Potterton, Main, and all the common UK brands including older boilers. We're also LPG certified so we can service LPG boilers on off-grid properties across the Lothians and rural central Scotland.
