Do I need to replace my radiators for a heat pump?

Some radiators may need upsizing, but in most Edinburgh and Lothians homes you don't need to rip out every radiator.

Here's the practical reality. Gas boilers typically run at 65-75°C. Air source heat pumps run more efficiently at 35-50°C. At those lower temperatures, a radiator puts out less heat — so to deliver the same warmth to a room it either needs to be larger, be a double panel instead of a single, or be a modern low-temperature type.

During the survey we do a room-by-room heat loss calculation and check every existing radiator against it. Typically:

  • Bedrooms and smaller rooms often have radiators already big enough to work fine
  • Living rooms and larger rooms are where upgrades are most often needed
  • Kitchens depend heavily on layout and the existing setup

We'll write up a clear list of which radiators stay and which need changing, and include it in the fixed-price quote so you're not guessing. If a whole-system upgrade isn't worth it for your home, we'll tell you that too.
